چکیده

The increased application of chemical control programs has led to the emergence and spread insecticide resistance in mosquitoes. Novel environmentally safe strategies are currently needed for disease vectors. use entomopathogenic fungi could be a suitable alternative insecticides. Currently, Beauveria spp. Metarhizium most widely used mosquito control, but increasing arsenal with additional is necessary mitigate resistance. Entomopathogenic distributed wide range habitats. We have performed comprehensive screen candidate mosquitocidal from diverse outdoor environments Maryland Puerto Rico. An initial screening 22 involving exposure adult Anopheles gambiae 2-weeks-old fungal cultures identified five potent pathogenic fungi, one which unidentified remaining four belonging three genera Galactomyces sp., Isaria sp. Mucor These were then screened against Aedes aegypti , revealing as killer. effects confirmed through spore-dipping assays. also probed further into killing mechanisms these investigated whether activities result potential toxic fungus-produced metabolites. Preliminary assays mosquitoes sterile filtered liquid showed that isolate 1 strongest producers factors showing lethality An. . was Ae. among them (two strains 1) never previously been described lethal insects. Further characterization their metabolites needs done confirm biologic

Entomopathogenic fungi for mosquito control: A review

Fungal diseases in insects are common and widespread and can decimate their populations in spectacular epizootics. Virtually all insect orders are susceptible to fungal diseases, including Dipterans. Fungal pathogens such as Lagenidium, Coelomomyces and Culicinomyces are known to affect mosquito populations, and have been studied extensively. There are, however, many other fungi that infect and...

RNA Interference for Mosquito and Mosquito-Borne Disease Control

RNA interference (RNAi) is a powerful tool to silence endogenous mosquito and mosquito-borne pathogen genes in vivo. As the number of studies utilizing RNAi in basic research grows, so too does the arsenal of physiological targets that can be developed into products that interrupt mosquito life cycles and behaviors and, thereby, relieve the burden of mosquitoes on human health and well-being. A...

Symbiotic control of mosquito borne disease.

It is well accepted that the symbiotic relationships insects have established with several microorganisms have had a key role in their evolutionary success. Bacterial symbiosis is also prevalent in insects that are efficient disease vectors, and numerous studies have sought to decrypt the basic mechanisms of the host-symbiont relationships and develop ways to control vector borne diseases. 'Sy...

Spore persistence and likelihood of aeroallergenicity of entomopathogenic fungi used for mosquito control.

Entomopathogenic fungi, such as Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana, are being researched as alternatives to chemical adulticides to control mosquito vectors of malaria and dengue. Two cited concerns of fungal control include conidial viability and risks fungal entomopathogens pose to human health. We measured spore viability of 10 fungal isolates over 26 weeks and found a range of pe...

Control of Pyrethroid-Resistant Chagas Disease Vectors with Entomopathogenic Fungi

BACKGROUND Triatoma infestans-mediated transmission of Tripanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, remains as a major health issue in southern South America. Key factors of T. infestans prevalence in specific areas of the geographic Gran Chaco region-which extends through northern Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay-are both recurrent reinfestations after insecticide spraying and eme...
